Child care advice: The symptoms and causes of common infant illnesses

Posted on 05-27-2014

The childcare professionals at Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Lawrenceville, Georgia, are fully trained in infant care. All teachers at Kids 'R' Kids are required to undergo training on Health, Safety, and Infectious Disease Control. There are several common illnesses that affect infants. Fortunately there are often signs and symptoms present during the most common infant illnesses, which include indications of when you should look for formal medical care.

Signs that your infant might need a doctor

  • Colds: When your baby has a runny nose, is irritable, wheezing, breathing rapidly, and/or coughing, it is likely he or she has a cold. Seek medical attention if your infant is younger than three months because a cold is a bacterial infection that can be aggressive at this age.
  • Ear infections: If your infant struggles to sleep, shows signs of irritability, and cries during feeding or when lying flat, these symptoms could be signs of an earache and you should seek medical attention. Fluids that build up behind the eardrum cause intense pain in an infant.
  • Fever: A fever may be an indication of a virus or bacterial infection that is infecting the baby's immune system. Take your child's temperature and monitor it to see that it does not go beyond acceptable levels for their age. If their temperature does not come down within 24 hours or if it shows signs of rising, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Diarrhea: Sudden changes in bowel movements from normal stools to runny, frequent stools could possibly indicate diarrhea. Accompanying symptoms such as high fever, bloody stools, and/or vomiting could very quickly lead to serious implications such as dehydration and require immediate medical attention.
